Popular Miami Mayor elected to Senate

MIAMI, 3 November 2000 - Jacinta Flores, Miami Sun - In what can only be described as a landslide victory over Republican opponent Bill McCollum, city of Miami Mayor Roberto Muñoz was elected to serve the state of Florida as a US Senator.  A strong favorite of the local Cuban community, Muñoz is expected to be a strong supporter of Hispanic issues, including loosening immigration and immigrant labor restrictions and strengthening sanctions against Cuba.  He is also a strong proponent of environmental protection issues, as well as a known supporter of expanding health and welfare benefits to the elderly.

"I am proud to be chosen by the people of Miami, and of Florida," Muñoz said, "and I will do my best to remember them, their needs, and their concerns in Washington."  Muñoz will be handing over the title of Mayor to Vice-Mayor Felix Rodriguez in December.

Frances Muñoz, the Senator-elect's wife, is well known for her efforts on behalf of a large number of children's charities.  She hopes to resume her work on a national level after the birth of the couple's first child, due April 2001.
